Guidelines for Training

The following "Guidelines for Training" were adopted by the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation on May 21, 1995, and published in Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Volume 1, page 56, 1995.

Objective

The objective of the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) is to ensure the highest quality of medical practice in hematopoietic transplantation medicine. It is the position of the society that all physicians performing blood and marrow transplantation must be licensed and should be board-certified in hematology, medical oncology, immunology, and/or pediatric hematology/oncology. In addition, physicians performing blood or marrow transplantation must receive specific training in meeting the guidelines below. Such training should be carried out at a program meeting the ASBMT guidelines for blood and marrow transplant clinical centers.

Overall Goal

The overall goal for training in blood and marrow transplantation is to ensure that physicians carrying out these procedures are competent in the use of high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell transplantation for treatment of malignancy or marrow failure.
