Guidelines on Timing
for Transplant Consultation
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and ASBMT have issued the 2006 update of the Guidelines on Recommended Timing for Transplant Consultation.
The recommendations identify prognostic factors for patients at risk of disease progression using standard therapy, and suggest which patients should be evaluated for transplantation by disease. The guidelines are based on current clinical practice, the medical literature and recent ASBMT evidence-based reviews. They are intended for use in patient counseling and initial discussion during development of a treatment plan that may include transplantation.
The updated Guidelines also are included in an online Physician Resources center maintained by the NMDP. The online center provides information on recent advances in transplantation, outcomes data and practical guidance on when and how to refer a patient for transplant consultation. The site also includes medical education and other services for physicians who have patients who are potential candidates for hematopoietic cell transplantation, including unrelated donor or cord blood transplant.
