Pediatric BMT Conference
|
The Pediatric BMT Conference will be held for the first time at the 2007 BMT Tandem Meetings.
Developed by members of the Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplant Consortium (PBMTC), the program is designed for clinicians, investigators and allied health personnel who have a particular interest in hematopoietic stem cell transplant therapy for children and adolescents. The topics and presentations will complement those in the main scientific program and will include oral presentations of the best pediatric abstracts.

Conference Description and Objectives
The pediatric BMT community cares for children with a variety of genetic disorders, many of which might ultimately be amenable to gene therapy and other novel cellular therapies. In addition, there is a growing need for increased communication worldwide among pediatric transplant programs to address the unique aspects of care for children.
Pediatric patients often metabolize drugs differently than adults, they have unique susceptibilities to alkylating agents and ionizing radiation, and the long-term outcomes of transplant are different than in adults.
The morning plenary session will bring together experts in the areas of gene therapy, mesenchymal stem cells and cancer immunotherapy. Other academic sessions will focus on specific pediatric topics. An afternoon workshop will address strategy and tactics for sharing clinical information and resources among pediatric BMT programs throughout the world.
The conference will:
· Provide an understanding of the most recent advances in gene therapy for children with primary immunodeficiency disease and address the current state of the art.
· Provide an update as to the characterization of mesenchymal stem cells and their use as a therapeutic option for treating selected childhood diseases and enhancing outcomes of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
· Provide an understanding of the role that cellular and immunotherapy might play in treating childhood cancers.
· Bring together pediatric transplant physicians, nurses and pharmacists from around the world to develop a framework within which to begin a dialogue regarding clinical trials and care.
The members of the conference organizing committee are:
Morton J. Cowan, MD, Chair
Stephen Grupp, MD, PhD, Vice-Chair
Carmem Bonfim, MD
Vickie Fisher, RN
Kirk Schultz, MD
Douglas Taylor, MD, PhD
