BMT Center Medical Directors Conference
Sunday – February 19
1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Emergency Preparedness: Getting Ready for Your Next Crisis
Chair: John R. Wingard, MD
Emergencies come at the most inopportune times. Some are totally unexpected, others come with short warnings. Although rare, an emergency has the potential to wreak disaster and pose serious risk to the services provided to BMT patients. Yet, thinking the unthinkable can mitigate the consequences of an emergency. Having a plan can help in each step of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
Several of your colleagues will present firsthand their experiences and lessons learned. The ASBMT Emergency Preparedness Committee will present a framework for a BMT-specific emergency preparedness plan with specific suggestions that can be used to develop customized guidelines on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from an emergency.
With reports of bird flu on the newspaper front pages, how prepared is your center to respond if an epidemic were to engulf your community? How does your center respond to the more typical winter outbreaks for respiratory virus?
Presenters for this conference include:
- Michael Boeckh, MD, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
- Dennis Confer, MD, National Marrow Donor Program
- John Edwards, MD, Florida Hospital Cancer Institute
- Armand Keating, MD, Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital
- Alan Leahigh, American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation
- John Wingard, MD, University of Florida Health Science Center

The BMT Medical Directors Conference will be held in Ni'ihau Meeting Room 312 on Level III of the Hawaii Convention Center.
