REPORT FROM:

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center

The Bone Marrow Transplant/Leukemia Program at the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center was not affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"We are high and dry in Shreveport,” reports Dr. John W. Hiemenz, director of the Hematologic Malignancies and BMT Program.  He said that the BMT program and facilities, which are part of the LSU Health Sciences Center, have recently been expanded.  “The current transplant team has extensive experience, and continues to evaluate patients from the entire state of Louisiana for autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation including unrelated transplants,” he said.

The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center operates out of a new multidisciplinary building and treats patients with the entire spectrum of hematologic malignancies, as well as all other malignancies with a wide range of clinical trials available, Dr. Glass said.

LSUHSC is a tertiary hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center located in northwest Louisiana, a 3½-hours drive from Baton Rouge, 3 hours from Lafayette, and 2 hours from Alexandria.

In addition to Dr. Hiemenz, the BMT/Leukemia Team includes Drs. Jonathan Glass and Reinhold Munker.

Contact information for the BMT/Leukemia Team at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is (phone) 318-675-5972 and (fax) 318-675-4338.  For emergencies, phone 318-675-5000 and ask for the hematology-oncology fellow on call.
