Review Addresses Transplants
for AML in Children
A comprehensive evidence-based review of blood and marrow transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in children appears in the January issue of Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
The review, supported by a grant from the National Marrow Donor Program, is the latest in the ASBMT series of evidence-based reviews of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for specific diseases.
The review is a comprehensive, systematic examination of published clinical research into the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in therapy for pediatric AML. Specific criteria were used for searching the medical literature and for grading the quality and strength of evidence.
Treatment recommendations are presented, based on the evidence and unanimous agreement by a panel of experts in AML. Priority areas are identified for needed future research.
The review of pediatric AML is the fifth in the series of ASBMT evidence-based reviews for specific diseases. Previous reviews have addressed:
· Diffuse Large Cell B-Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
· Multiple Myeloma
· Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Adults
· Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Children
Work is continuing on a parallel review of AML in adults to be published later this year.
