Review Addresses Transplants

for AML in Adults

A comprehensive evidence-based review of blood and marrow transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adults appears in the February issue of Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

The review, supported by a grant from the National Marrow Donor Program, is the latest in the ASBMT series of evidence-based reviews of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for specific diseases.  It is accompanied by an ASBMT position statement.

The review is a comprehensive, systematic examination of published clinical research into the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as therapy for adult AML.  A companion review of the literature for pediatric AML was published in the January 2007 issue of Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Criteria recognized within the medical research community were used for searching the medical literature and for grading the quality and strength of evidence.  The report includes treatment recommendations, based on the evidence and unanimous agreement by a panel of experts in AML.  Priority areas are identified for needed future research.

The report is the sixth in the series of ASBMT evidence-based reviews for specific diseases and patients.  Previous reviews have addressed:

·      Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Children

·      Multiple Myeloma

·      Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Adults

·      Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Children

·      Diffuse Large Cell B-Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

A review of the evidence for BMT in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome is being completed for publication later this year.
