Conference Will Ready Centers
for Radiation/Nuclear Emergency
A one-day conference will address ways that BMT centers and personnel can prepare for radiation/nuclear emergencies.
The conference, to be held Sept. 25 in Bethesda, Md., is being organized by the Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN), a cooperative effort of the National Marrow Donor Program and ASBMT.
An agenda and registration information are available online.
The conference will provide an overview of the impact and medical challenges that would arise after a radiological accident or the detonation of a nuclear bomb within the United States borders.
Why Attend This Conference?
"We believe there is a significant possibility that a radiological event will occur within the next few years," Dennis Confer, MD, NMDP chief medical officer, said.
"Because of their expertise, transplant physicians and their teams would be best able to care for victims suffering from acute radiation syndrome. We are the medical personnel best equipped to manage acute marrow failure and multi-organ toxicity," he said.
