FACT Accreditation Helps Cancer Centers

Make ‘Best Hospitals' List

FACT accreditation now helps a hospital attain its ranking among “America’s Best Hospitals,” published annually by U.S. News & World Report.

The news magazine has begun awarding points to hospitals and medical centers with BMT programs that meet the standards of the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy.

The magazine's methodology for ranking hospitals is refined annually, and this year recognizes FACT accreditation for the first time.  Among other methodology updates:

·         Hospitals specializing in geriatrics receive points if they are recognized by the National Institute on Aging for having an Alzheimer’s center.

·         30-days-from-admission mortality rates are being used (instead of death-at-discharge mortality rates) in all Institute of Healthcare Quality-driven specialties except cancer.

·         A patient/community service index has been updated to be consistent with the services expected from the best hospitals.

The magazine put 5,462 hospitals and medical centers through progressively finer screens to create rankings for 16 health care specialties.  Designated as the top 10 for cancer care are:

       #1

University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
