BBMT May Be Referenced

for Off-Label Therapies

Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation has been added to the list of scientific journals recognized by Medicare for determining coverage for off-label therapies.

Medicare carriers are allowed to evaluate the quality of evidence in published peer-reviewed medical literature when determining whether there is supportive clinical evidence for a particular treatment or drug use.  For the past 14 years, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recognized 15 journals for citations justifying payments.

Newly added to the list – the first additions since 1993 – are BBMT and 10 other journals:

·         Bone Marrow Transplantation

·         Clinical Cancer Research

·         Gynecologic Oncology

·         International Journal of Radiation, Oncology, Biology, and Physics

·         Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)

·         Journal of Urology

·         Lancet Oncology

·         Radiation Oncology
